    Do EVs Really Emit 1850x More Than Traditional Cars? Let's Unpack the Facts There's been a lot of talk about electric vehicles (EVs) being the ultimate fix for our planet's pollution problem. But recent insights suggest it's not all black and white. A study highlighted that EVs could actually produce more particles from their brakes and tires than traditional cars, mainly because of the heavy batteries they carry. But let's zoom out for a moment. Every vehicle, no matter what powers it, wears down its tires and brakes, contributing to pollution. The catch? EVs don't emit CO2 while driving, giving them an edge over gas and diesel cars, which are major sources of both CO2 and particle pollution. Delving into the specifics, electric vehicles (EVs) emit approximately 67 mg/km from brake and tire wear, a stark contrast to the 180 g/km of CO2 emissions from gasoline vehicles. This means EV non-exhaust emissions account for merely 0.03% of those from internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) per kilometre. Such data not only underscores the environmental advantage of EVs but also emphasises the need for ongoing technological advancements to further minimise their ecological footprint. Highlighting concerns about the heavier batteries in EVs, which add about 100 kg more than ICEVs, misses a broader point. Consider an ICEV with an extra 100 kg passenger; the weight difference with an EV is invalid. This perspective underscores that EVs' additional weight hardly negates their environmental advantages. The slow initial adoption of solar energy in the U.S., compared to India's rapid embrace of green energy, illustrates how scepticism can hinder progress. Despite challenges, EVs represent a significant step towards cleaner air and a reduced carbon footprint, particularly as innovations make them even more sustainable. Powered by renewable energy, EVs have a crucial role in reducing pollution and addressing climate change. This journey towards a greener future highlights the need for continuous innovation and a balanced approach to sustainable technology.
