When correctly driven, screws, as do nails, both have really good holding power. Screws can also be removed if needed. Another consideration of importance in furniture and building construction is that they pull parts together. Not only does this add to strength and rigidity but in some instances it can eliminate the need for clamping. Screws can be more decorative than nails and in many application are more acceptable exposed than nails would be. Screws can be concealed by countersinking deeper than necessary and then filling the hole with wood dough. This, however, is not the most satisfactory method. A better way is to counterbore deep enough so the screw-head will end up about 1/4" below the wood surface. Then fill the hole with a dowel. This can be sanded flush after the glue dries. If you plan much of this, it will be wise to check into getting a few plug cutters. With these you can make your own short dowels from the same material used in the project, which will make it possible to match the concealment plug to surrounding areas to the point where it will be difficult to discern.
